Change control
How should a proposed PV module model substitution be reviewed?
Control photovoltaic module substitutions through a documented technical, commercial and project-impact review.
Short answer
A replacement with similar wattage is not automatically equivalent. A substitution review should compare model identity, electrical and mechanical fields, layout, mounting, inverter compatibility, certificates, warranties, logistics, schedule and commercial consequences before approval.
Change control
Freeze the approved baseline
Identify the original model, datasheet revision, calculations, drawings, certificates, warranty and quotation terms that the project previously accepted.
Compare every affected interface
Use a field-by-field deviation table. Include dimensions, weight, electrical values, temperature behavior, frame and connector details, packing and required evidence.
Update downstream documents
An approved change must flow into drawings, bills of material, string schedules, procurement records, installation instructions, serial tracking and handover files.
A controlled substitution decision
Follow the changed model through every previously approved interface.
| Field or step | Example entry or evidence to record |
|---|---|
| Difference schedule | Original and proposed model / power bin / dimensions / mass / electrical fields / connector / mounting / certificates / warranty / each source revision. |
| Affected approvals | Layout, structural calculation, string schedule, inverter review, destination evidence, procurement and delivery plan; list the owner and reapproval state of each. |
| Release gate | Do not mark equivalent until required differences are accepted and downstream drawings, orders and handover index identify the as-supplied model. |
Record template: replace prompts with project evidence and retain unresolved items. It does not authorize purchase, installation or release.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Is equal wattage enough for equivalence?
No. Many electrical, mechanical and documentary fields can differ.
Can procurement approve the change alone?
Only if the project's defined approval process gives it that authority and technical impacts are closed.
What if the change occurs after design approval?
Reopen every affected calculation and document before release.
