Environmental evidence

How should salt-mist, ammonia and PID test claims be verified?

Verify environmental test claims through exact model scope, test method, severity and report status.

Short answer

Potential-induced degradation (PID) is degradation associated with electrical potential stress. A phrase such as salt-mist tested, ammonia tested or PID resistant is incomplete without the exact model scope, test method, severity or sequence, pass criteria and current report or certificate. Test evidence supports qualification; it does not predict maintenance-free life at every site.

Environmental evidence

Ask for the evidence behind the label

Record the issuing body, report or certificate number, tested model family, test edition, severity and result. Marketing shorthand should not replace these fields.

Compare the site exposure

Coastal distance, airborne contaminants, humidity, temperature, cleaning, mounting materials and electrical grounding can affect project risk beyond a laboratory test.

Carry conditions into design and operation

Use compatible materials, approved installation instructions, inspection and maintenance planning. State clearly when project-specific corrosion or degradation advice is still required.

A hazard-to-test evidence register

Describe the exposure first; test names alone do not establish project suitability.

Exposure
Coastal salt / agricultural ammonia / humidity and temperature / electrical bias: record site evidence and the project's required assessment.
Report
Test standard and edition / severity or sequence as stated / exact model and construction / laboratory / dates / result / limitations.
Gap
Separate not supplied, outside covered construction and unresolved site relevance. Accelerated tests do not convert directly into years of guaranteed service life.

Record template: replace prompts with project evidence and retain unresolved items. It does not authorize purchase, installation or release.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Does passing a test guarantee no degradation?

No. It is evidence under defined conditions, not a universal lifetime guarantee.

Are all test levels equivalent?

No. Method, severity and sequence must be compared.

Can a certificate for one family cover another?

Only when the document explicitly includes or validly extends to it.
