Inspection methods and limits

How should visual and electroluminescence inspection of PV modules be used together?

Use visual and electroluminescence evidence for different observations without treating either method as a complete diagnosis.

Short answer

Visual inspection and electroluminescence (EL) imaging reveal different evidence. A visual check can document surface, frame, junction-box, cable and labeling conditions; EL can reveal cell or interconnection patterns under a controlled setup. Neither result should be interpreted without method, reference images and agreed criteria.

Inspection methods and limits

Define what each method can observe

Visual inspection depends on lighting, viewing conditions and accessible surfaces. EL depends on electrical excitation, imaging equipment, exposure settings and module condition. Record the setup so another reviewer understands the evidence.

Avoid diagnosis from one image

A pattern may have several causes and not every visible mark has the same consequence. Use trained review, comparison criteria and additional testing where needed instead of converting one image into an unsupported failure conclusion.

Preserve identity and chain of evidence

Link every image to model, serial number, pallet or installation location, date, operator and inspection stage. Retain originals and record any cropping, contrast adjustment or annotation used for reporting.

An image acquisition and disposition log

Make an inspection image reproducible and traceable before assigning a diagnosis.

Identity and acquisition
Serial / model / inspection stage / operator / date / original file; visual lighting or EL excitation, camera and exposure settings.
Observation, not diagnosis
Describe visible location and pattern; reference image and criterion; confidence or uncertainty; additional evidence requested.
Evidence control
Keep originals plus an edit log for cropping, contrast and annotations; link the review decision and unit disposition to the original image ID.

Record template: replace prompts with project evidence and retain unresolved items. It does not authorize purchase, installation or release.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can EL replace visual inspection?

No. The methods observe different conditions and should be combined according to the inspection purpose.

Does every dark EL area prove a failed module?

No. Interpretation requires the test setup, pattern, reference criteria and technical review.

Can edited images be used as evidence?

Keep the original file and document any enhancement or annotation so the evidence remains traceable.
