Product configuration control

How should photovoltaic module bill-of-materials changes be controlled?

Connect approved product configuration, evidence and project impact when a photovoltaic module bill of materials changes.

Short answer

A model name alone may not describe every component or approved configuration. Where the transaction requires bill-of-materials (BOM) control, define the accepted baseline, permitted alternatives, notification route and evidence needed before any component, supplier, factory or process change is accepted.

Product configuration control

Define the controlled baseline

Identify which components and attributes are contractually controlled, which documents describe them and whether approved alternates already exist. Do not imply access to confidential manufacturing detail beyond the agreed scope.

Assess the consequence of change

Review whether the proposal affects electrical, mechanical, reliability, certification, warranty, appearance, packaging, schedule or commercial requirements. Similar component names do not prove technical equivalence.

Update every linked record

Accepted changes should appear in the approved submittal, deviation register, inspection plan, certificates where relevant, purchase records and final handover package. Retain the decision and effective production range.

A material-change impact register

Trace a material change to the approved construction and downstream evidence.

  1. Change identity

Change ID / component / old and new approved specification / issuer reason / affected model, batch and effective date.

  2. Evidence impact

Identify qualification or retest decisions, certificate coverage, drawing, supplier qualification, process controls and contractual notification affected.

  3. Batch release

Named approver / accepted evidence / updated records / first affected serial or batch / customer decision where required. A same model name does not settle construction equivalence.

Record template: replace prompts with project evidence and retain unresolved items. It does not authorize purchase, installation or release.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Does the same model code guarantee an unchanged BOM?

Not necessarily. The contract and approved configuration determine what must remain controlled or be disclosed.

Can an alternate component be accepted by name alone?

No. Its documented applicability and impact must be reviewed under the agreed process.

Should confidential manufacturing data be published?

No. Exchange only the evidence and level of detail required by the contract, review and confidentiality rules.
