Roof area and module geometry
How should photovoltaic module size be selected for a roof?
Use usable roof geometry, access zones and exact module dimensions to review photovoltaic module size.
Short answer
Do not divide gross roof area by module area. First map usable zones, setbacks, obstructions, access and mounting geometry; then test the exact module dimensions and orientation in a real layout.
Roof area and module geometry
Measure usable rather than gross area
Edges, fire and maintenance access, drains, skylights, equipment and shaded zones can reduce the area available to modules. The governing rules depend on the project location.
Test actual module geometry
A larger module can reduce unit count but may create unusable strips or difficult handling. Compare portrait and landscape arrangements using the exact frame dimensions and mounting requirements.
Connect layout to engineering
A preliminary packing study is not a structural or electrical design. Confirm loads, attachment points, cable routes, string boundaries and safe work access with qualified project parties.
A panel-only area calculation
Use the published SH21R-48H-D dimensions as an initial arithmetic check, not a roof layout approval.
| Field or step | Example entry or evidence to record |
|---|---|
| Published dimensions | 1762 × 1134 × 30 mm; face area = 1.762 × 1.134 = 1.998108m². |
| Ten-module example | 10 × 1.998108 = 19.98108m² of module faces, before gaps, access, setbacks and obstructions. |
| Required drawing | Record orientation, row count, obstacle dimensions, support interface and accepted clearances on a scaled drawing. |
Dimensions are published model fields; the ten-module quantity is an illustration. This is not usable-roof area or an installation instruction.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Can gross roof area estimate module count?
Only as a rough ceiling. A usable-area layout is required for a credible count.
Are smaller modules always better on roofs?
No. They may improve geometric flexibility, while larger formats may reduce unit count. Test both against the roof.
Does a layout replace engineering review?
No. It must be followed by structural, mounting, electrical and compliance checks.
